This is a guest post from another resident of Northern Wisconsin highlighting the struggles that property owners have to deal with when living in an area full of bloodthirsty hounders. The writer also writes about the endless threats and intimidation directed at those who disagree with the behavior of hounders and other predator haters.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE

As a northern Wisconsin resident, I appreciate clean air, pure water, little if any development, tranquil forests and waterways and the freedom to roam public lands with my dog any season; any time. The very reason most people live or move to northern Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s wild side is what attracts 14-million visitors to OUR state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas per year. Escape to Wisconsin. Go Wild. Well, not exactly the case and soon to regress from any “wild” due to our undermining Legislators who are rapidly dismantling OUR public lands.

Life in northern Wisconsin comes with many obstacles besides Legislators. One being the safety we are all entitled to on public lands. Hunting accidents occur all too often as many of our canine friends are shot, trapped or poisoned as well as residents who are shot on their own property due to so-called ‘hunter error’. Living in a secluded area, I have been told to stay out of harm’s way during hunting season. Apparently, it is rational for coyote hounders to run their dogs 365-days/year and bear hounders 4.5 months/year but residents cannot run their own dogs when they choose. Hunting privileges begin April 15 with bear baiting and run until the end of open bear season which is mid-October. Bear hound training begins July 1 and ends around October 6. Open bear season begins early September winding down mid-October. Basically, hunting and trapping continue for many species until spring turkey season begins. Therefore, it seems hunting and trapping take precedence most of the year regardless of tourism and resident interests even though revenue from eco-tourism is much greater than hunters who claim their contributions pay for conservation. Hunters fund conservation efforts, but it is for game animals they can hunt.

How safe are our private properties? Hunting hounds sometimes 6-at a time, trespass on my property and adjacent seasonal residents’ properties every year and often every day during open bear season and frequently during unlicensed bear training. They announce their arrival by yelping, tantalizing pets sometimes killing them, alarming home owners, trampling through gardens and disrupting any wildlife in their path. When addressing the issues with Legislators and WDNR, I am instructed to 1) call the warden, 2) call the sheriff 3) restrain the 6-cackling hounds and take them to the Humane Society. Restrain 6-bloodthirsty hounds? That’s safe. Wait 45-minutes for a sheriff? Call the warden who is on another call in a different county? For real? Trespassing on private property is a heaping fine of $25.-$100. IF caught and may escalate to $250.-$500. In 2016. Traditional hunting with hounds no longer exists. Hounders hang out by their vehicles miles away from their malicious hounds tracking them by GPS. Interestingly, residents who are left with injured or killed pets are not compensated in any way by the state. Yet, hounders who have lost their hunting hounds to wolves while bear hunting; even in dangerous designated wolf zones, are compensated by the state at $2,500/hound for the loss of their unsupervised precious gems. Why? Because they purchased a license to hunt? Wisconsin is the only state that reimburses bear hunters for their hounds killed by wolves…hounds unleashed, unsupervised in the pursuit of bear. GPS collars do not substitute handler responsibility.

Some hounders really do have a passion for their hounds. Three were abandoned and tied up to trees on state property near Antigo. Some extreme hounders kill their hounds if they do not meet their expectations. Humane Societies in northern WI report most abandoned hounds have Lyme Disease. How many hounders are checked by enforcement to verify their hounds have rabies tags and dog license tags for each dog while training and hunting? It is believed that approx. 360-450 stray hunting hounds are found in northern Wisconsin per year.

Besides stray hounds running at large, personal encounters with some hounders can be rather interesting. While Representative Adam Jarchow has schemed up a new Hunter Harassment Law, http://www.nbc15.com/home/headlines/Wisconsin-legislator-touts-bill-to-curb-hunter-harassment-337990432.html hunters harass residents even on their own property. Some have stolen trail cams and have threatened to burn the house down if reported to the warden. Another extreme hunter claimed he would trap an alpha male wolf and torture it just for me so I could post the footage on Facebook and go “tree-hugger viral”. After all, we are all considered dumbass, city dwelling tree-huggers and are clueless to wolf issues, over-baiting bears and hounder invasion not to mention public safety. Actually, we are post-graduate bred environmentalists who live and understand the behaviors and wellbeing of wildlife but apparently that doesn’t sink in. For those who disagree with our logic and specifically the condemnation of coyote contests, why not loosen all my lug nuts on my truck and watch a 50lb rim split down the middle and launch like a missile into traffic as I experienced shortly after the Argonne Coyote Killing Contest. Revenge? Better yet, perhaps posting screen shots of several hounders’ CCAP records would provide insight to many matters including claims on hound depredation by wolves. Poaching is yet another matter.

Safety is an issue as several residents from Cable and the Bayfield area recently moved to central WI due to poaching, wild gunfire and continuous hounder conflicts, thanks to Mr. Quintessence. Residents and tourists have the right to venture in the wild of northern WI without fear of losing their pet’s limbs to traps or dodging hounds and bullets. Trespassing is a violation and extreme hunters and hounders require disciplinary action. Safety comes first and the public needs to be aware of how unsafe and unsettling life can be and how wildlife is treated and tormented in northern WI. Eventually, the wild in northern Wisconsin will deteriorate and evolve into an over developed, deforested, polluted, unnatural disaster. While Legislators ‘friend’ greedy developers, energy extractors and factory farmers and ‘unfriend’ public opinion, they continue to move forward with destructive environmental Bills which will deplete our natural resources and transform our forests, public lands and waterways into a pile of profit. Wisconsin is for sale and a more appropriate slogan might be; Escape Wisconsin.

Two Peas in a Hate Filled Pod: Domestic Terrorism and Anti-Wolf Zealots

dont-tread-on-me

A gunman armed with an AK-47-style weapon burst into a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs Friday, shooting at police from inside the building during the ensuing five-hour standoff.

Three people, including a police officer, died during the incident, Colorado Springs Police Department Lt. Catherine Buckley said. Nine others, including five officers, were wounded.

This is the world that we live in today. Where once again racism, hate, and domestic terrorism is mainstream and essentially encouraged or condoned by the right wing media and the hate pages on social media.

I have long been saying that the anti-wolf/wildlife groups and individuals are often one in the same with the same type of deranged lunatic that attacked the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. They feed off of the same hate filled media sources both mainstream and on social media. I recently pointed out some terroristic threats against Native Americans emanating from one of the sickest and most vile pages that Facebook somehow allows. When will people wake up and realize that wolves, women, “liberals,” “tree huggers,” union members, refugees, ethnic minorities, or anyone else that doesn’t conform to the Foxbot world view are all potential targets in both the cyber and physical world?

From Dictionary.com:

terrorism
[ter-uh-riz-uh m]

noun
1.
the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.
2.
the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.
3.
a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.

What is being practiced by these people fit the definition of terrorism to a tee, yet most on the left in our country are too afraid apparently to call a spade a spade or a terrorist a terrorist. We are consumed with and more worried about the sick religious fanatics thousands of miles away while we have fanatics just as dangerous operating right in our own backyard and lashing out at Americans far more often than most realize. This is the modern American far right wing that seems to be lashing out each and every day from misguided “frustrations” that no sane person can understand. These people and the sick and depraved messages that they spread via outlets like Fox “News,” right wing hate radio, and the innumerable hate web and social media sites, are a clear and present danger to our country. Not refugees. Not “liberals.” Not abortion providers. And damn sure not environmentalists. These people lash out violently at any perceived “threat” to their way of life or at those who are “different” politically or ethnically and they are terrorists both in the cyber world and in real life.

You may be asking what any of this has to do with wildlife? I think that the answer is clear and right in front of our faces. Take a look at any of the hate filled anti-wolf/wildlife social media pages and the links will be abundantly clear. Right wing talking points. Worship of the 2nd Amendment while ignoring the first. Links to right wing and chickenhawk filled “militia” and anti-government groups. The links go on and on while the sane element of society pretends that these groups and people pose little if any threat after the latest news cycle ends.

The reality is that these groups and people pose a major threat. Not because of those behind them, because they are usually chickenhawk cowards, but because of those that follow them.

I have reached the point where I am sick and tired of being attacked and berated for standing up for wildlife and for real progressive values and not the watered down corporatist crap spread by modern “Democrats.” I served this country in the Army and I continue to serve my community each and every day. Many others that share our concern and passion for our wildlife and country have done the same, yet we are labeled as “enemies” and “Anti-American by the neo-fascist right wing hatemongers and by the anti-wolf/wildlife/government social media hate sites.

We have let these hate mongers get away with labeling Americans, like myself and others in the wildlife advocacy world and other progressive movements, as being Anti-American because we dare stand up for real freedom and for real life, both human and animal. Because of these beliefs and our actions we are targets for both the chickenhawk cowards spreading hate on social media and from the REAL terrorists that want those like us dead as much as any Jihadi in the Middle East does.

Colorado Springs was another wake up call that will likely fall to the wayside like the myriad of other domestic terror attacks that we have seen in just the past year. The old adage of how you “can’t yell fire in a crowded theater” applies here. Freedom of speech is one of the most wonderful elements of our society but it comes with a steep price. The modern neo-fascist right wing hate machine is using it to destroy our country from within. One of the wonderful and frustrating things about wildlife advocates and most real progressive minded people is that we are free and independent thinkers. The idiom of “herding cats” comes into play each and every day among people like myself. That does not apply to the modern right wing hate mongers and their followers. No element of modern American society falls into line a toes the “party line” more than the modern right wing.

As we saw during the wolf slaughter seasons in 2012, 2013, and 2014, bloodlust and groupthink rule the day when it comes to the anti-wolf/wildlife/government/etc factions. They take half truths, propaganda, and blatant lies as fact and seek to pile on with hate, fear, and sheer savagery. This while trying to play the “victim” in the process. If those of us in the wildlife advocacy and progressive movements acted out and made statement like those that come daily from the right wing media hate machine and the social media hate sites, we would be labeled “eco-terrorists” or worse. When someone from our side of the political spectrum acts out of line we call them out as we should. When someone poaches a wolf or attacks an abortion provider they are lauded as a hero and encouraged to act out even more drastically by the right wing. Then when someone else does it is the fault of “the left” or some other straw man that make convenient scapegoats like a certain canid species.

I implore anyone reading this not to take any of the online threats and hate speech that time encounter lightly. While the person that composed it may be a chickenhawk coward spreading hate from their mom’s basement, there are usually followers of that garbage that will take the hate and fear mongering to heart and lash out. Whether it is threats to poach wolves in Wisconsin, threats against government officials, threats against ethnic minorities, or any other boastful proclamations we must take it seriously. The “red flags” are always there despite the media always throwing out the ridiculous “lone wolf” argument as if wolves should be equated to terrorists. As was the case with the Colorado Springs domestic terrorist yesterday he had a history of animal abuse and domestic violence which the justice system continually gave him a free pass on. Next time you are browsing one of the anti-wolf/wildlife hate pages take note of those posting and the comments they make. There is a very good chance that you will see or hear of them again.

Please report any domestic terrorism threats here or to your local law enforcement agency. This is also a reminder for all wildlife advocates and those espousing a progressive belief system to remain vigilant and be aware of any threats directed at you or your family and to always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity. I put nothing past the modern right wing hate machine or the anti-wolf/wildlife zealots.

Anti-Wolf Facebook Page Allows Terroristic Threats Against Native Americans Following Night Hunting Ruling

As a wildlife advocate very few things shock me anymore. This weekend I was forwarded some screenshots of some racist, violent, and frankly terroristic level comments from an anti-wolf Facebook page with some of their fans threatening to kill and “scalp” Native Americans in response to the recent federal judge ruling legalizing night deer hunting. The commentators also threaten to “disrupt” the Native hunts in the same manner that they just decried while supporting Adam Jarchow’s anti-free speech bill last Wednesday. The hypocrisy cannot be any stronger here. Nor can the revulsion from these sick comments.

There has also been a concentrated effort from bear hounders/anti-wolf elements to harass and threaten wildlife advocates on OUR own pages. Some of the people doing the harassing and attempted intimidation are the very same people who testified at last Wednesday’s hearing telling the committee they were “terrified” and were being “harassed” by wildlife advocates. This includes a former warden for the Wisconsin DNR according to several wildlife advocates.

The Internet and social media in particular has become a bullying platform and propaganda outlet for the anti-wolf pseudo-tough guys, mostly from rural areas, to use against wildlife advocates and to spread racist and hateful rhetoric against people such as Native Americans.

During and following the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Wisconsin wolf slaughter seasons wolf killers and their allies took to the Internet to post bragging pictures of dead wolves and often proceeded to taunt wildlife advocates knowing the emotions such bloody images would generate. Much like the manner in which the unethical “hunters” bait in bear, wolves, and other wildlife, they often posted these vile snuff pics to bait wildlife advocates and prey on our emotions. The problem came when they made attempts to email wildlife advocates taunting emails showing dead and mutilated  wolves, coyotes, and other wildlife or post them on pro-wildlife pages and hope for a response.

Like most right-wing internet trolls the anti-wolf/wildlife and racist trolls on these hate pages thrive off of us responding with emotion. Then they can say “See they are nothing more than overly emotional hippies” or some other insulting nonsense. Think about the source of most of these inflammatory posts and comments. These are scared little men, and some women, whose lives revolve around killing animals and harboring hatred for anything or anyone that does not conform to their isolated little worlds. First they blame something like wolves for every failure in their pathetic lives because they are an easy and long demonized target. Then when wolves aren’t convenient enough of a scapegoat they turn to other long demonized groups like Native Americans, African Americans, or immigrants.

It used to be that these people were relegated to their rural hate filled enclaves and thankfully the rest of the world didn’t have to listen to their hateful screeds. Today with the Internet the entire world is an audience for their hate filled, ignorant, and often racist drivel. They tend to thrive on being acknowledged and like the insolent overgrown children most of these anti-wolf/ racist people truly are, they throw a tantrum when ignored. They try to hijack pro-wildlife web pages and the comment sections of news stories about wildlife or people such as Native Americans.

I have long refused to engage in back and forth banter with these hateful internet trolls. They seek acknowledgement and when ignored they often spiral into their hateful temper tantrums and try to hijack a dialogue. Simply put wildlife advocates need to just ignore, block, or report the hateful screeds that emirate from these people. The worst of these trolls sit in their isolated rural enclaves and spread their vile and hate filled drivel, threats, and attempts at intimidation knowing if they acted in real life toward people as they do on the Internet there would be a very different result.

We also saw this on full display during and after Florida’s recent bear slaughter when trolls and self-described “conservationists” took to Facebook and news article comment sections to laugh about bear cubs being left to starve following the slaughter in which 300 bears were killed in less than two days. What does it say about these people when they celebrate the mass slaughter of a species and then make snide comments and finding humor in the starvation of bear cubs? The same thing occurred following the mass slaughter of wolves in Wisconsin in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Today following the resisting by a federal judge in December 2014 the taunts and bragging of poaching have replaced the taunts following “legal” kills in the past three years among many on these hate sites. What does it say about people who take pleasure in the suffering of another species and the starvation of their offspring? I would bet most if not all of these internet tough guys also consider themselves “pro-life” as well?

What I also find quite ironic is how many of the anti-wolf/wildlife/racist trolls write rambling posts about how Native Americans are “lazy drunks” that kill all he wildlife. The irony comes in with a simple gander at the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access System showing how so many of these people have drunken driving convictions, hunting violations, criminal convictions, tax evasion, foreclosure, and civil process for not paying their bills. To be fair, I am sure many wildlife advocates share the same types of incidents but they also don’t claim a racial or cultural superiority so blatantly as the anti-wolf/wildlife/racist trolls do. There are also idiot “wildlife advocates” that engage in threats and attempted intimidation. They should be ostracized in the same manner and have no place in our movement.

Now comes the revolting part. All of the above and below screenshots were forwarded to me and I am going to let them speak for themselves. I would gather from the openly hostile and frankly terroristic tone of these comments that those making the comments do not understand that the hate site they posted it to is viewable to the entire world. Oops.

There you have it. The true face of these folks that pretend that they are “conservationists” that pretend that wildlife advocates are the “emotional” ones. Scalping? Going back to “cowboys and Indians?” Roadblocks with AR-15s?

Most of the time I just blow off the ignorant drivel posted on that page. This is different. The fans of that page and by default those that run it are allowing open and pretty specific terroristic threats against Native Americans. I and other wildlife advocates have long known that there is a strong racist and anti-governmental element to the anti-wolf factions but this more than shows what their true motivations are. This goes far beyond the typical anti-wolf trolling and screeds encouraging poaching. This crosses into terroristic threats against those of a particular ethnicity and frankly it is revolting. Perhaps the federal authorities may be interested in this? Civil Rights groups? This makes me sick and every decent American citizen should feel the same way, hunter or not.
